Recipe: Classic Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients

  • 4 (1/2 inch) slices green tomato
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 3/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 3/4 cup corn meal
  • salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste
  • cayenne
  • vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Sauce:
  • equal parts sweet relish and mayo
  • hot sauce to taste

Instructions

Step 1

Cut the green tomato into 1/2 inch slices. It probably makes 4 slices.

Step 2

Put tomato slices on a rack on the top of a paper towel, drizzle some salt on the top of the slices. Let sit for 15 minutes.

Step 3

Pour 3/4 cup bread crumbs, 3/4 cup corn meal, some salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste, some cayenne into a bowl. Give it a mix.

Step 4

Add an egg into another bowl, then 2 tbsp milk, stir well. Remove the rack in step 2. Place the tomato slices on paper towel. pat dry.

Step 5

Put 1 cup flour into a big bowl, Put a tomato slice into the bowl, let it coated with flour, sit for 30 seconds.

Step 6

Then transfer the tomato slice into the egg mixture in step 4, let it coated. Then transfer the tomato slice into the corn mixture in step 3, let it coated.

Step 7

Then transfer the tomato slice back to the rack. Then transfer the tomato slice back to the rack. Repeat the process for the remaining slices.

Step 8

To make sauce, put equal parts sweet relish and mayo, hot sauce to taste into a bowl, stir well.

Step 9

Add some oil and a butter into a pan, when the butter melt. put in the tomato slice.
Cook for 3-4 minutes per side.when turn golden, transfer to a serve plate. serve with sauce.
